Inside the Texas Triangle. Working ranch and farm country directly west of Houston — Bellville, Sealy, Industry, Cat Spring, and Wallis. Not to be confused with the city of Austin (that's Travis County, about two hours northwest).
Austin County is one of the oldest counties in Texas, sitting about an hour west of Houston on Interstate 10. The county was selected in 1823 by Stephen F. Austin as the central site of his "Old Three Hundred" colony, the first Anglo-American settlement in what would become the Republic of Texas. Both the county and the city of Austin are named for him, though the city of Austin sits about 110 miles northwest in Travis County. This page is about the rural county, not the state capital.
The county's original seat was San Felipe, which earned several Texas firsts: the organization of the first Texas Rangers, the first English-language school in the state, and the first organized police force in Texas. The seat later moved to Bellville (in 1846, after Thomas and James Bell donated land for the new courthouse town). San Felipe today is a small community anchored by the San Felipe de Austin State Historic Site.
German immigration shaped the rest of the county. Industry, founded in 1831 by Friedrich Ernst, is the oldest German settlement in Texas and seeded the wave of German immigration that defined Austin, Fayette, Colorado, and Lavaca counties. Cat Spring, Bellville, and the surrounding communities still carry that heritage in family names, church names, food traditions, and the historic dance halls that anchor community life.
The land is gently rolling, productive, and well-suited to cattle ranching, hay production, hunting, and row crops. Many ranches have been in the same family for multiple generations. The county sits inside the Texas Triangle, about an hour west of Houston via I-10, an hour and a half to the city of Austin, and about two hours from San Antonio.
Ag exemption is widely available across the county under cattle, hay, or wildlife management. J4LP works Austin County actively and routes leads through the central line to the right agent for your situation.
